My four year old just graduated her preschool 4’s class and is out of school for the summer. This has me asking myself “what am I going to do to keep her occupied?!” Not really in the sense that I feel any obligation to keep her busy. It’s more about keeping her engaged in creative play and learning throughout the summer months.

We are so lucky to have access to wonderful community and church programs for kids and families! These are some ways I’m planning to continue the learning through summer fun:

Park play
Library visits and summer reading programs
Reading a book series (we just started the Laura Ingalls Wilder series!)
Planting and caring for a garden
Church Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs
Visits to the local farmers market on the weekends
Summer gymnastics program
Community festivals and the county fair
Weekly trips to our local kids science center

Another fun way to enjoy the summer months is to create crafts and activities at home. Last week my daughter and I made inexpensive homemade sidewalk chalk paint. Super fun!

STEP 1

In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup corn starch with 1 cup water.

STEP 2

Pour the corn starch mixture evenly into 5 small plastic containers with lids.

STEP 3

Add 1-2 tablespoons washable paint into each container. Cover tightly with the lid and shake to combine.

Use inexpensive paint brushes and rollers to paint the chalk onto sidewalks.

CLEAN UP

The sidewalk chalk paint washes away easily with water. Use wipes to clean little hands and faces and anything else that gets messy! My favorite wipes are Huggies One & Done (thicker texture for big messes) and Huggies Simply Clean (so perfect for little faces and hands!).
