Whipped Sweet Potatoes

Buttery Sweet Side Dish

Sweet potatoes are a must for my Thanksgiving table! I love them almost any way they’re served. My aunt makes the most delicious whipped sweet potatoes with a crunchy cereal topping. So good! My grandma’s used to make the traditional yams with marshmallows on top. Marshmallows at dinner? Kid heaven!

I distinctly remember one Thanksgiving probably twenty years ago when one of my aunt’s brought Whipped Sweet Potatoes to dinner. It was the first time I had tried them and OH-EM-GEE. So delish! I still remember her sneaky expression when someone commented on how amazing they were and she whispered, “LOT’S of butter!”

That’s they key; plenty of butter. I’m not even going to lie about this… butter makes them better.

Easy Dinner Side Dish

Not only are Whipped Sweet Potatoes awesome for holiday dinners, they’re just right for weeknight meals too! Click here to see my Parmesan Crusted Baked Chicken recipe that I served these potatoes with.

Whipped Sweet Potatoes are great with steak, chicken, fish, or pork. So versatile!

Making Whipped Sweet Potatoes

To make Whipped Sweet Potatoes, you’ll need to start with baked sweet potatoes (I have a trick about this I’ll mention at the end!). Peel the hot potatoes (be careful!) and place the sweet potato flesh into a large mixing bowl.

Peeling baked sweet potatoes to make Whipped Sweet Potatoes

I used a butter knife to cut up the sweet potatoes a bit before whipping. This is not really necessary, but made the start of whipping a little easier.

Next, add butter…

A LOT of butter! This is one stick of melted butter. Don’t be shy.

Then whip away!

Finally, you’ll stir in a little brown sugar. Or a lot… I won’t tell.

Description

Whipped Sweet Potatoes are a perfect compliment to chicken, fish, steak or even for Thanksgiving dinner. Buttery and slightly sweet, these creamy whipped sweet potatoes will delight all of the potato lovers!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium sweet potatoes
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • Optional garnish: butter, black pepper, brown sugar, ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Wash the sweet potatoes well and pierce the skin several times with a fork. Place the sweet potatoes on a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil and bake at 400 for 45-60 minutes, until tender. Note: actual baking time depends on the side of the sweet potatoes and may vary.
  3. Very carefully peel the skin off the hot sweet potatoes and place the orange flesh of the potatoes into a large mixing bowl; discard the skin.
  4. Add the melted butter and salt; whip the sweet potatoes with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy in texture.
  5. Stir in the brown sugar.

Garnish with items of your choice: pats of butter, freshly ground black pepper, brown sugar, or ground cinnamon. Makes 6 servings.
