Chocolate Chip Cheese Danishes are the way you’ll want to start the weekend! A buttery, crisp puff pastry filled with sweetened cream cheese and rich chocolate chips then drizzled with homemade frosting. Drop that Pop Tart and pick up one of these!
All Hail the Puff Pastry
I adore puffed pastry. It’s so versatile and can flex between sweet recipes and savory, breakfast treats and fancy party hors d’oeuvres, simple sandwiches and special occasion dinners.
I’ll admit to never having made homemade puffed pastry. I may someday, but why when we have access to wonderful Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry?! It’s one of the best things in the freezer section of the grocery store. Just thaw and use!
To make the Chocolate Chip Cheese Danishes, I thaw the puff pastry and then cut each sheet into three strips by using the fold marks as a guide.
I then cut each strip in half. This turns the two original puff pastry sheets into a total of twelve rectangles.
You’ll want to use a sharp knife to score a border into each puff pastry rectangle (see picture below). Scoring meals to cut just the top layer. Don’t cut all the way through the pastry. The scoring allows the outside border of the pastry to puff up while the middle stays lower to hold the filling.
After the pastry triangles are scored, prick the center area a few times with a fork. This helps prevent the middle from rising too much.
I mix up a simple cream cheese filling and casually spread in onto the center area of each rectangle.

Next comes the chocolate! Sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips on top of the cream cheese filling. Be sure not to use milk chocolate, or the chocolate will for sure burn. Semi-sweet chocolate chips have no dairy or much less dairy than milk chocolate and therefore can withstand the oven temperatures for longer. I made a mistake once and used milk chocolate morsels in chocolate chip cookies and could not believe how fast that chocolate burned!
Finally, an egg wash is brushed onto the outside border of the pastries. This will give them a beautiful golden brown shine.
In the Kitchen With the Kids
If you have kids in your home, this is a great recipe to include them on the preparation! My six year old daughter helped me stir the cream cheese mixture, sprinkle the chocolate chips, and brush on the egg wash.
After baking for about 18 minutes, they look like this:

I then whipped up a very simple icing to drizzle over the Chocolate Chip Cheese Danishes. I like to use heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar. The cream is very thick and creates a thick frosting. I like this better than using milk which tends to make a thinner frosting. Just use milk though if you don’t have cream. You could even stir in a tablespoon of cream cheese and a splash of vanilla extract for a little richer flavor.
Yummmm!
Aren’t they pretty?!
I just made these for my family, but I cannot wait to make them for a brunch party or for out of town guests. People will think you bought these yummy danishes from a bakery!

Chocolate Chip Cheese Danishes
Description
Chocolate Chip Cheese Danishes are the way you’ll want to start the weekend! A buttery, crisp puff pastry filled with sweetened cream cheese and rich chocolate chips then drizzled with homemade frosting. Drop that Pop Tart and pick up one of these!
Ingredients
17.3 ounce box puff pastry (two sheets of pastry in the box), thawed according to package directions
6 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 egg
2 tablespoons water
1/3 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons heavy cream
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Unfold the puff pastry sheets and lay out on a flat surface. Use a knife to cut along the fold marks to create three equal sized strips.Cut each strip in half to make a total of 12 rectangles.
3. Arrange the puff pastry rectangles on a large, ungreased cookie sheet leaving at least 1 inch of space between each rectangle.
4. With aparing knife, lightly score a border around the entire edgeof each pastry rectangle, about ¾ inch away from the edge. Use a fork to poke a few holes into the center area of each pastry. This process allows the outside border to rise and puff up while the center stays shorter and holds the filling.
5. In a small bowl, combine the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract.Spoon equal amounts of the filling into the center of each pastry rectangle. Spread it ontothe dough within the inside border. (This can look “rustic” and the filling does not need to be “perfectly” spread.)
6. Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips on top of the cream cheese mixture.
7. In a small bowl, beat the egg and water together. Use a pastry brush toapply a thin layer of the egg wash to the outside border of each pastry. Discard any leftover egg mixture.
8. Bake the pastries at 400 for 18 minutes, untilthedanishes are golden brown.
9. In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar and heavy cream (milk can be substituted for cream, but will make the frosting thinner). The consistency should be somewhat thick, but still thin enough to drizzle. If the consistency is too thick, add a little more cream; if too thin, add more powdered sugar.
10. Cool the danishes on a baking rack for 10 minutes. Drizzle the frosting over the danishes.
Makes 12 servings.
