7 Helpful Tips to Declutter Your Counter

Taming My Messy Counters

I’m embarrassed to admit this, but… I have a messy counter problem! It’s not on purpose, of course. But somehow the kitchen counter ends up being the dumping ground for all sorts of things.

The kitchen just happens to be the first room my family enters when we come home every day. We park in the garage, walk into the kitchen, and unload whatever we are holding right onto the kitchen counter. This means it has become the messiest place in the house!

So, here is my moment of truth… are you ready? This is so embarrassing, but this is what my kitchen counter looked like before I decluttered: 7 Helpful Tips to Declutter Your CounterI know, right?! Ick! I see random things that need to be put away, piles of clutter, and things that have no home so they just sit on the counter. As much as I try to straighten up the mess as often as possible, I needed to do a serious decluttering and rethink how we use our counter in general.

I came up with 7 Helpful Tips to Declutter Your Counter that were helpful to me and I know they will be to you too. These tips helped me take my counter from that awful before picture to this: 7 Helpful Tips to Declutter Your Counter Neat and clean!

I was inspired to tackle this project for two reasons: first, we are about to move to a new home and we want to be sure we don’t move this problem with us! And second, I was inspired to get my counters organized when I got my new Keurig® K-Duo Plus™ Single Serve & Carafe Coffee Maker. The Keurig® K-Duo Plus™ is brand new to Bed Bath & Beyond!

7 Helpful Tips to Declutter Your Counter

Here are 7 tips that helped me declutter my counter:

  1. Does it need to be on the counter?

When assessing my messy counter issue, I asked myself the question “does this need to be on the counter?” about every item. Other than my K-Duo Plus™ coffee maker, a small organizer for bills and other small items, and two glass jars for pens and scissors, the answer was “no.” So all of those items had to find a new home.

  2. Use your cabinets.

I had so many appliances and little items on the counter that I didn’t use very often. All of these are now stored in a cabinet instead of out on the counter.

  3. Purge.

Some things just need to be given away, sold, or thrown out. If there is something on your counter that you rarely use, get rid of it!

  4. Use organizers

Maybe you decide, like I did, that you do want to keep your bills, keys, and other important items on the kitchen counter. Get an organizer! Keep all of these items in one place and use an organizer rather than allowing them to sit in a messy pile.

  5. Empty space is good space.

Get out of the mindset that you have to have things on your counters. Just the essentials that are used every day are necessary. Let there be empty spaces on your counters.

  6. Set a new routine.

Instead of walking into your kitchen, setting things down, and walking away, get your family in the habit of putting all of their things away immediately.

  7. Use fewer appliances.

You may be able to have an over the stove microwave installed instead of having one sitting on your counter taking up space. Perhaps you can put your toaster in a cabinet if it isn’t used every day. Take a look at the small appliances you have out and decide if it is necessary or if it can be stored away to be taken out only when needed. I was able to eliminate a regular coffee maker, a coffee pod brewer, and a hot water kettle by using the new counter space saving Keurig® K-Duo Plus™ coffee maker.
