Pass the Angel Biscuits

Is there anything more delicious and comforting than a homemade biscuit? When I was a kid, one of my favorite meals was my mom’s homemade beef stew with Angel Biscuits hot from the oven. A perfect dinner to warm the soul!

This recipe for Angel Biscuits came from an old church cookbook. We’ve adapted it a bit over the years, but it’s still one of the best church cookbook recipes out there!

Biscuits are usually dense, crumbly, and butter. Nothing wrong with any of that! But these Angel Biscuits are also amazing. They’re pillowy soft and fluffy, a bit more like a dinner roll.

I recommend eating the biscuits with plenty of butter and amazing local honey.

Making Angel Biscuits

These yeast raised biscuits are simple to put together. You’ll begin by proofing the yeast. This means mixing warm water and the yeast with honey to activate the yeast. After 5-10 minutes you should see that the yeast if foamy (if it isn’t, the yeast is no good or the water was too hot and killed the yeast).

While the yeast is proofing, you’ll stir together the dry ingredients and cut in the butter.

Next, add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix well.

You will knead the dough for just a minute on a floured surface.

Then, form the dough into a 6×6 inch square with your hands (don’t go too wide or the biscuits will be too thin!) and cut out 9 2×2 inch square biscuits.

Allow the biscuits to rise in a warm place in your kitchen, then place them in a cold oven and turn the oven on to 400F degrees. I know, this is odd! This is called a cold-rise method and from what I know it’s not very common. But it works well! The biscuits finish rising quickly as the oven heats up. Once the oven reaches 400F, allow the biscuits to bake for 10 minutes, or until golden brown.

There can be some variation in cooking time because some ovens may heat up quicker than others. So just keep an eye on your biscuits at they bake and pull them when they’re nice and golden brown on top, but before they have a chance to over cook on the bottom.

Description

Did you know you can make yeast raised biscuits? Angel Biscuits are light, fluffy, and so soft! Just perfect with a bowl of soup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) instant yeast
  • 1/3 cup warm water, heated to about 110 degrees
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup milk

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, stir together the yeast, warm water, and honey. Set aside for 5-10 minutes until the mixture is foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter with a fork or pastry cutter until the butter is completely combined.
  3. Add the milk and yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until combined, then turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 30-60 second until smooth (the dough will still be sticky).
  4. Pat the dough out into a 6×6 inch square and cut into 9 square biscuits.
  5. Place the biscuits onto a greased cookie sheet and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Set aside in a warm place for 30 minutes to begin rising.
  6. Remove the kitchen towel, then place the sheet of biscuits in a cold oven. Set the oven to 400F degrees. When the oven temperature reaches 400F, bake the biscuits for 10 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Serve the biscuits warm with butter, jam, or honey
