Why buy beans in a can when you can make delicious homemade Instant Pot Refried Beans? You will love this incredibly easy recipe that turns dried pinto beans into yummy, creamy refried beans in a snap!

Instant Pot Refried Beans

When Homemade is Easiest

Listen friends, we are too busy to mess around with a complicated, time consuming recipe when it comes time to feed our hungry people. I love to cut corners and save time with convenient foods from the grocery store. But at the same time it’s important to be aware of the ingredients in our food and cook from scratch whenever possible.

This is why you will love this Instant Pot Refried Beans recipe! Super convenient and filled with only the best ingredients. Making food from scratch like this allows you to control what goes in to the food and using an Instant Pot makes it so easy.

Instant Pot Refried Beans are so Cheap to make!

In the past, canned refried beans have been a staple and almost always on my shopping list. My daughter loves my homemade bean dip with corn chips for a snack, so I always keep the ingredients on hand. Usually, a can of refried beans is about $0.99 for a 16 ounce can where I live. Not too bad.

However, homemade refried beans is even cheaper! Here is what I spent on the ingredients:

  • Beans (1/2 a bag was what I needed for the recipe) – $0.85
  • 1 onion – $0.25
  • 2 cloves of garlic – $0.17
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil – $0.47
  • Salt and cumin – $0.25 (estimate)

Total cost = $1.99 for a batch of refried beans 4 TIMES larger than one can of store bought refried beans. So basically, making Instant Pot Refried beans provided a better product for HALF the price.

Making Homemade Refried Beans

First, you’re going to want to measure your beans into a bowl and sort through them with your fingers to look for any small rocks (yes, I said rocks!). No one wants a rock in their refried beans! I usually find at least one small rock in every bag of beans, and sometimes more.

Next, add cool water to the bowl (this is not the 7 cups of water called for in the recipe itself) and run your hands through the beans to look for any little rocks that you missed the first time through.

Drain the water from the beans and set them aside while you mince garlic and chop an onion.

Next, you’ll add your beans to the Instant Pot and add in the onion, garlic, water, salt, cumin, and olive oil. Give it a quick stir and then lock the lid into place and cook (see instructions in the recipe below).

When the cooking and steam release time is finished, you’ll have perfectly cooked beans! Isn’t it nice to not have to mess with soaking them overnight and cooking them for a really long time?!

Instant Pot Refried Beans

You will absolutely need an immersion blender for this recipe. If you don’t have one, click here to order one from Amazon and have it at your door in two days if you have Prime.

The immersion blender very quickly turned the cooked beans into smooth, creamy refried beans. Yum!

Serve your refried beans alongside any Mexican or Texmex dinner. You can top the beans with crumbled queso fresco, melted colby or cheddar cheese, sour cream, fresh cilantro, and lime wedges.

These fresh refried beans can be stored in your refrigerator for three days, or portion the beans out into small freezer bags and freeze for up to three months.

Description

Why buy beans in a can when you can make delicious homemade Instant Pot Refried Beans? You will love this incredibly easy recipe that turns dried pinto beans into yummy, creamy refried beans in a snap!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups dry pinto beans
  • 7 cups water
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Rinse the pinto beans in cool water, sifting through the beans with your fingers to find and remove any small rocks that may be mixed in with the beans.
  2. Pour the pinto beans into your Instant pot. Add the water, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, cumin, and olive oil; mix well.
  3. Cover the Instant Pot with the lid then lock the lid in place and set the steam valve to “sealing.” Select 45 minutes of cook time.
  4. When the beans have finished cooking, allow the pressure to drop naturally for 20 minutes, then release the steam vent.
  5. Place a colander into a large bowl. Pour the cooked beans into the colander and allow the bowl to catch the cooking liquid.
  6. Transfer the beans to a large bowl. Add ½ cup of the cooking liquid. Use an immersion blender to puree the beans until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve hot. Makes 8 servings.

Notes: The refried beans may be stored in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze in smaller containers for up to 3 months.
