Homemade Cinnamon Swirl Bread

Handmade from the Heart

Don’t you feel like homemade bread is one of the most wonderful things that can come out of a home kitchen? Making bread is so simple and a fun activity to do with your kids. The measuring, mixing, kneading, waiting for dough to rise… these are great opportunities for little ones to learn and get experience in the kitchen.

On one slower paced day recently, I took some time to make Homemade Cinnamon Swirl Bread with my daughter. It turned out so beautifully, I’m excited to share the recipe with you!

Clean Hands

Before making bread, we made sure our hands were super clean. I love the NEW Dial Complete® 2 in 1 Moisturizing & Antibacterial Foaming Hand Wash. It sits on the counter next to the kitchen sink, always ready for washing hands before cooking or eating.

Have you heard of this new line from Dial®? (check them out here) From America’s beloved soap brand of 70 years, comes a breakthrough new line-up, Dial Complete® 2 in 1 Moisturizing & Antibacterial Beauty Bar and Foaming Hand Wash. We know hand soap needs to be antibacterial, but we also love moisturizing soaps. Now there is 2 in 1!

With 2x moisturizing ingredients, Dial Complete® 2 in 1 Foaming Hand Wash gives you soft, smooth hands, even after repeated washing. I feel good knowing that Dial® kills 99.99% of bacterial encountered in common household settings.

Making your own Homemade Cinnamon Swirl Bread does take a little bit of patience. As you would expect with bread making, there will be time required for the dough to rise twice. But in the end, you’ll have two delicious loaves! The bread makes amazing toast or can be eaten fresh with butter.

Ingredients

Scale

2 packages (1/4 ounce each) dry active yeast
Pinch of sugar
1/3 cup warm water (about 110°)
1 cup warm whole milk (about 110°)
1 cup sugar, divided
2 large eggs
6 tablespoons butter, softened
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the yeast and warm water. Add a pinch of sugar and let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the milk, 1/2 cup sugar, eggs, butter, salt, and 3 cups of flour, then beat on medium speed until smooth.
  3. Stir in the reaming flower a little at a time to form a soft dough.Turn dough onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes).
  4. Place the dough in a large greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  5. Mix cinnamon and remaining sugar together in a small bowl. Set aside.
  6. Punch down the dough then turn onto a lightly floured surface.
  7. Divide the dough in half and roll each portion into an 18×8-in. rectangle. Sprinkle each rectangle evenly with the cinnamon sugar mixture to within 1/2 inch of the edges. Roll up the dough jelly-roll style, starting with a short side. Pinch the seam to seal.
  8. Place the dough in two greased 9×5 inch loaf pans, seam side down. Cover with kitchen towels and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1-1/2 hours.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°.
  10. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes, until golden brown.
  11. Remove the loaves from the pans to cool.

Making Grilled L.A. Cinnamon Bread

Alright, so the real reason I wanted to make Homemade Cinnamon Swirl Bread is so that I could make Grilled L.A. Cinnamon Bread. This is a treat I enjoy at a local diner on occasion. It’s a thick slice of cinnamon swirl bread, buttered on both sides, then “grilled” (pan fried) until golden brown on both sides. It’s then plated up and drizzled with frosting. So yum!

Here’s how you make your own Grilled L.A. Cinnamon Bread:

  1. Generously butter both sides of two slices of Homemade Cinnamon Swirl Bread.
  2. Pan fry the bread over medium heat until golden brown on both sides.
  3. In a small bowl or ramekin, combine 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar with 1 teaspoon milk or cream. Add 1 tablespoon of whipped cream cheese (or regular cream cheese that you soften and stir until smooth) and stir well.
  4. Place the Grilled L.A. Cinnamon Bread on a plate and drizzle with the frosting.
  5. Enjoy!
