Homemade Cinnamon Apple Sauce is so simple to make and so full of sweet apple and cinnamon goodness. Pick your favorite fresh apples and whip up this perfect apple sauce any time!
The Fruits of the Harvest
Apple picking is a super important tradition for my family. We go to a local orchard in September or October every year and haul away a big half bushel of delicious, crisp, tart, and sweet apples. It’s so fun!
Apple desserts are the best; especially in the fall. When I’m thinking apple dessert, I for sure will be making Caramel Apple Rose Tarts (they’re gorgeous!) or the ever popular Double Crumb Apple Crisp.
But for an every day sweet treat, you just can’t beat homemade cinnamon apple sauce. It’s a delicious side dish, snack, or dessert after a weeknight dinner.
Making Homemade Cinnamon Apple Sauce
To make the apple sauce, start by choosing a great apple. I used fresh apples that we had just picked, so they were perfectly firm while also being a great blend of sweet and tart. You can use any apple you like.
Peel and chop the apples and put them into a large pot or Dutch oven.
Add the sugar. Now, if you want to go light on the sugar, choose a sweet apple with less tartness. Cut down on the sugar by half. You can always add a little more at the end if you need to.
Add plenty of cinnamon. I love a good amount of cinnamon in my apple sauce.
Add the water, then cover the pot and cook the apples until they are very tender. You should be able to mash a chunk of apple very easily with a fork.
For chunky apple sauce (my favorite!), mash the apples with a potato masher. If you want the apple sauce to be very smooth, cool it slightly then transfer to a food process and pulse until smooth. An immersion blender could also be useful for pureeing the apple sauce into a smooth consistency.
And there you have it!
You should serve your apple sauce warm. It’s just so good! Leftover apple sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for several days.
